virus problems

Everytime I try to install some anti virus software either my computer
crashes or it says the files are corrupt and to re-download it.

I have tried McAfee, symantec, Trend micro and Avast. None of these will
install.

I have tried deleting all my temp internet files and cookies - still doesn't
work.

I have tried using both explorer and Mozilla to download - neither work.

I am getting a bit desperate and wondered if anyone had any idea - obviously
from the above I get the impression my computer is infected but don't know
how to go about fixing this problem when I can;t get any anti-viral software
to load.

Oh yes - and occassionally my computer will crash for no reason - but that
may just be windows.

I'm using windows xp and as far as I am aware both SP 1 and 2 are installed.

I have also turned off system restore to try to get it to work - but it
still crashes or says the files are corrupt.

Please please help!

You could already have a virus on the computer corrupting the process,

Download MULTI_AV.EXE from the URL --
http://www.ik-cs.com/programs/virtools/Multi_AV.exe

To use this utility, perform the following...
Execute; Multi_AV.exe { Note: You must use the default folder C:\AV-CLS }
Choose; Unzip
Choose; Close

Execute; C:\AV-CLS\StartMenu.BAT
{ or Double-click on 'Start Menu' in C:\AV-CLS }

NOTE: You may have to disable your software FireWall or allow WGET.EXE to go through your
FireWall to allow it to download the needed AV vendor related files.

C:\AV-CLS\StartMenu.BAT -- { or Double-click on 'Start Menu' in C:\AV-CLS}
This will bring up the initial menu of choices and should be executed in Normal Mode.
This way all the components can be downloaded from each AV vendor's web site.
The choices are; Sophos, Trend, McAfee, Kaspersky, Exit this menu and Reboot the PC.

You can choose to go to each menu item and just download the needed files or you can
download the files and perform a scan in Normal Mode. Once you have downloaded the files
needed for each scanner you want to use, you should reboot the PC into Safe Mode [F8 key
during boot] and re-run the menu again and choose which scanner you want to run in Safe
Mode. It is suggested to run the scanners in both Safe Mode and Normal Mode.

When the menu is displayed hitting 'H' or 'h' will bring up a more comprehensive PDF help
file. http://www.ik-cs.com/multi-av.htm

Since YOU suggested Stinger, which one of the 54 targeted infectors and variants do you
think is Shostakovich_81 computer ?

Stinger hasn't been updated since Oct 5 '05 and has a very limited target list. Since
Shostakovich_81 hasn't provided enough information to ascertain one of the Stinger targeted
infectors, a more broad spectrum approach is warranted. In the tool I proposed, the McAfee
module alone has ~175,000 signatures including, and removing, everything that Stinger
targets.

| Perhaps run an offline Anti-Virus scan using CIA DRiVE.net from

Doubt that that's needed. However, if it is the Multi AV Scanning Tool has instructions for
using it in conjunction with NTFS4DOS.

Hi there guys,

Well, I tried the Multi_AV.exe first off - and it seemed to be working fine
- managed to download the AV software - but then when I tried to run it the
AV crashed.

Had already used stinger (which did manage to download) but you're right -
it didn't pick anything up.

Finally think I've managed to correct the problem, connected my desktop to a
friend's laptop via a hub (router) and scanned it that way. And it did pick
up a couple of viruses. Not the karma sutra one though.

Finally got it working - Avast is installed and up-to-date and there have
been no crashes of late.

Thanks loads for all your help - very much appreciated!

Which AV scanner crashed ? You had four different vendor scanners to use.

Yeah I know - it downloaded the Trend one perfectly - but when I ran the
Trend in normal mode it crashed and wouldn't run. the Panda one took ages to
download and I never finished it - by that time I had the other computer set
up and scanned it from that.
