SQL Programmer

Hello:

I am running Symantec AntiVirus right now on my Vista laptop just in case,
as I am not 100% sure. But, there is a possibility that I may have a virus
or malware on my system.

Nothing bad has happened, yet. But, last night, a dialog box all of a
sudden came up offering to run a virus check. Those things are bogus, so I
clicked “Cancelâ€. Then, another window came up, offering to scan my system.
I promptly closed out of it, of course.

Nevertheless, do you know of any recent viruses or malwares that are “going
around†and, if so, do you know of any cures?

Thanks!

Your system is infected with a rogue antivirus program. These are very
common, unfortunately. It is called "rogue" because it pretends to be A
Good Guy but is really Evil. Do not pay them!

Because you didn't give me the name of the program that is trying to get you
to buy it, I can't point you to specific removal steps. Look for them here:

Bleeping Computer removal how-to's -
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/forum55.html
or here - Malwarebytes malware removal guides - http://tinyurl.com/5xrpft ]

These may work for you and all may be well. However, in many cases the
computer will also be infected with Zlob and/or Vundo trojans and protected
by a rootkit. These machines are extremely difficult to clean.

If your machine is one of these cases, either get guided help at one of the
specialty forums below OR back up your data and do a clean install of
Windows. It is your choice. If you are unsure how to back up your data or
how to do a clean install, you can take your machine to a local computer
professional. I don't recommend using BigComputerStore/GeekSquad types of
places.

When you see a pop up message like that, you should End Task the message
window (or turn off your PC) instead of responding to the message. If you
click on the message window (doesn't matter where you click), there's a good
chance that the 'bad codes' designed to infect have been executed on your
machine to some extent.

There are a lot of rogue antivirus out there. The cure? Format and reinstall
is always my preferred method of getting rid of infection. You're guaranteed
to have 100% clean system (if you do it right).

You are infected with Malware.
Use the 2 Programs below to scan your computer, and remove the problems:

http://www.spybot.info/en/index.html

Spybot Search & Destroy 1.6 is a very good, FREE Anti-Spyware Program.
Download, install, update, and immunize your System with it.
Then SCAN with it.
Update it, and scan your System once a fortnight.

http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php

Malwarebytes is as the name says, a Malware Remover!
For the Free version scroll down their page to either download from
Download.com, or Major Geeks.com

Download, install, and update.
