I got punked by a virus. It is finally gone but when I try to restore I get
the following error message: "System Restore Application has encountered a
problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." However, it
never opens to need to close. How can I reinstall or repair System restore?

Since the virus may have damaged other system files that you don't know about
yet; you probably should do a repair since it will repair the vital system
files and leave everything else in tact.

Insert windows cd > setup > new install > repair

Because windows new install feature will find an installation on your hd, it
will give you the opportunity to either repair it or install from scratch.
If you don't get the repair choice, you should exit and post an update
here......

I opened the CD, clicked on setup and then Install Windows XP. Because I have
Windows XP Service Pack 2 when I put in my CD Windows XP Home Edition it
says, "Setup cannot continue because the version of Windows on your computer
is newer than the version on the CD. What should I do?

oh no, i hate when that happens. apparently you have a win-xp sp1 or
something.

not sure how to proceed. I recently gotten some interest and found a site
that shows how to slip stream the sp2, merge it with winxp sp1 to create a
winxp sp2 and then create a win image.... If i find it the site i;ll relay
the url to you. in the meantime, lets hope someone has an idea for you or
maybe you can do some research at microsoft.com.... (you probably have that
sp2 download stored in your system, since your win was apparently updated...)

When I try to extract the files to the folder I created XP-SP2 it does not
give me the option to choose where I want to extract the files to. It keeps
trying to extract them to another folder without my permission. How do I
change that so that I can choose the folder to extract the files to?

The command %SystemRoot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe gives me the same
results as doing it the regular way.

No, this is irrelevant to his newer version problem.

DEBNC, you have SP2 installed, and your XP CD is without it, so is an older
version than what's installed.

You have two choices:

1. Uninstall SP2, do the upgrade, then reinstall SP2.

2. Better, create a slipstreamed version of XP Professional, including SP2,
and use it. See http://forum.aumha.org/viewtopic.php?t=7262
or http://www.webtree.ca/windowsxp/slipstream.htm

When I try to extract SP2 to folder as instructed the computer will not let
me choose what folder to extract to. It extracts to a folder of ITS chosing.
How can I make my computer let ME choose which folder to extract to?
