virus havoc

On February 25 I discovered the W32.mydoomf@mm virus and found the removal tool through symantec. After running the tool twice and norton antivirus my computer appears clean. Except now many of my folders are missing their subfolders, files and many documents. My computer hangs up all the time. Many of my desktop themes and backgrounds are missing as well as photos and projects. I cant even use system restore it wont go back any further than February2004
I am sure this is only the tip of the iceberg. Is there any way I can repair my system with out loosing more data? Can I use my XP instillation disk to make repairs? Is there some thing I can run to locate my other missing files or are they totally gone due to the virus and its removal? How can I keep my computer from hanging up upon start up I think their may be to many processes running but I am unsure of the safest and easiest way to stop them all from opening upon start up

I know its alot to ask for but any help at all would greatly be appreciated

Thank You

Wow ! That is sure a nasty one that you contacted. I would not try to fix a
install with this much damage . Back up your important files onto a cdr (
hopeful you have one) , and reformat and reinstall. Scan your backup file
thoroughly before reinstalling to new install. Jym
