Has anyone here used virtual to capture video and has made either avi's
and mpeg's from the capture..If so can someone please tell me how to do
it..I have some videos homemade that i want to capture and compress to
avis and mpegs.

First off, VirtualDub won't capture to mpeg2 (the DVD style).

There is a LOT more information that we'd need to answer your question.

What format are your videos in now (vhs, 8mm, DV)? What kind of
hardware do you have (camcorder with firewire, video/audio in ports,
nothing)? What do you want to do with the final files (watch on your
computer, burn to DVD, post to web)?

You would do a lot better reading the guides over at
<www.videohelp.com> first. They have lots of information and their
tool list gives a good run-down of what's available.

it works fine,a bit picky on codecs ,
when editing cut/paste sound may get out of sync
but nice and easy and seems quite stable

only does avis, but other tools can convert

doesn't have an output rename option, although it does autoincrement

noncompressed capture doesn't need a high speed machine, but eats disk space
100 gig an hour for video , 700 meg an hour for uncompressed cd stereo audio
compressed needs a gig or two depending on size and compression and
content/noise

your capture device has a lot to say about what is possible

here are cutnpaste my setup notes for quick grabs on a
2gig machine, which does okay compressing on the fly up to
720x400 but the one channel with all the good stuff has lousy
reception, so noisy captures start to get behind at that size

virtualdub works nicely on XP, I also use a larger payapp that
does everything better but being older only works in 98/ME
...and locks up and needs a reboot every hour or two with my
otherwise favourite codecs

compression codecs may affect your ability to edit later on
