VirtualCD/DVD Apps - Alternatives to Alcohol?

F

filthy-mcnasty

Any good free apps which can run an ISO file as a virtual CD/DVD?
Preferably retaining the virtual drive settings and any "mounted" ISO after
a reboot. I know about Alcohol, but want to try any alternatives to see
which best suits my setup

Thankyou

If you want a small no frills virtual cd, the one from Micro$oft does
the job. It has a persistent setting.
Easiest place to get it is
http://www.softwarepatch.com/windows/index.html
bottom of the page - free virtual CD ROM 2.1

Thanks Rich, looks good. Have downloaded the program and information
pages, and hope to get around to trying it in the next few weeks. Have
you used it yourself?
Only to see that it works, tried it in a virtual win98 machine, seems
ok.
I assume you have to turn your target CDs into Iso images to use
thismagic disc. Have you done this successfully with a freeware
program and then used MagicDisc to run them?
No, but MagicDisk has the ability to make an ISO or a .nrg (nero) image
also compress an iso image, which might be useful.
My main application is to use it to run a two-disk database that
requires one of the disks to be in the drive at all times - a very
tedious condition for a laptop that has only an external SCSI CD-ROM.
I only use a virtual CD - the M$ one - for an old map app. which comes
on 8 CD's - much disk swapping involved. M$ v.CD starts with drive
letter Z and works back, Magic disk starts first available drive letter
and works forward. Not going to reinstall map app. just to change the
virtualcd installation

best of luck

I have used it a long time, works great with cd's and dvd's.

Use LC ISO Creator from http://www.lucersoft.com/freeware.php

Thanks, but the readme.txt file says "for Win NT/200/XP". I'm running
98SE. Does it work with 98 as well?

I tried running it, and got a startup error popup that said:

a required .dll file, MFC42U.dll, was not found.

Get the file XPburn and Easy ISO creator from
http://www.paehl.de/home.htm
It's in the english freeware section - near bottom of page. XP burn is
for ....err. XP: but author says Easy ISO Creator works with Win98.

It should work fine with 98SE.

Ah yes, that one can be found at

Hmmm. Dirk is also the author of Iso_Burn.exe, which has burned a lot
of coaster for me, including one a couple of days ago.

But I went to have a look. Found a link for "burning tools", but
couldn't connect to even look at the page. I did get a page about
making a donation.

Thanks. Interesting site. But it says I need javascript and popup
windows to download.

I don't even know what popup windows are!

And javascript aka active scripting is one of the biggest security
holes there is in Windows (and especially Win98, since MS stopped
providing security patches some time back). So I guess I'll have to
find this dll somewhere else.
