Virtual PC host-guest networking when host not connected to a network?

Hello,

My laptop is in a LAN and connected to the Internet by a route acting as
a DHCP server.
Using Virtual PC both my host and my guest gets an IP address from the
DHCP server of the router. The LAN ethernet network adapter is used by
the 'virtual switch' of VPC. The network settings of the guest are set
to 'virtual switch' also.
In this situation I have a 'real' network between my host and my guest,
in both directions, and it works fine.

When I use my laptop as a stand alone PC, not connected to my network,
but the network adapter still enabled, the status is displayed as 'cable
unplugged'.
In that case the networking between my host and my guest is gone : host
and guest can't find each other, no communication.
Looking with ipconfig only the guest seems to have an IP address
(delivered by Virtual PC acting as a DHCP server). The host does not
have an IP address ...

I have tried to assign a fixed IP address, first only to my host,
afterwards to both my host and my guest, but without success.

What are the settings to organize a network between host and guest when
the host himself is not networked ?

Kind regards,

Dominiek

When the host isn't connected to a network, configure the Virtual
Switch to use the Microsoft Loopback Adapter as its network adapter.

To install the loopback adapter (only needs to be done once):

1. Go to Control Panel | Printers and Other Hardware.
2. Click "Add Hardware".
3. Click Next.
4. Select "Yes, I have already connected the hardware".
5. Click Next.
6. Select "Add a new hardware device" from the list and click Next.
7. Select "Install the hardware that I manually select from a list"
and click Next.
8. Double click Network Adapters.
9. Click Microsoft Loopback Adapter and click Next twice.
10. Click Finish.
