virtual memory too low 2

My computer is running slow and I keep getting messages
that my virtual memory is too low. My computer will keep
increasing virtual memory until it gets to 1.5GB if I do
nothing.

I open task manager and look at the processes one of
them "svchost.exe" a local service is using around
200,000K of memory. It does this if the computer is just
sitting idle or being used. If I end this task, the page
file usage drops to 128 and will stay around there. But
the hard drive will chatter continuously.

I read a post where someone had a similar problem.
Someone replied that it sounds like a memory leak that a
program is grabbing RAM every minute and not releasing it
until it uses so much that virtual memory needs to be
increased. He also said to go to task manager and look in
the processes and see if anything stands out. Thats it?
what do you do after that?

For me something stands out svchost.exe local service. My
question is - how do you find and fix memory leaks?
I am very frustrated and would appreciate any help.
Thank you

I have a 40gig hard drive with 23gig free
1.7Ghz intel celron
384MB RAM
Mcafee firewall (updated)
Mcafee virus scan (updated)
Spybot S&D (updated)
ad-aware 6.0 (updated)
All microsoft updates
I have run disk defragmenter
My paging file settings are:
initial size 600MB
maximum size 1650MB

I suggest you update your virus definitions and run a full anti-virus scan. Also you download Adaware from http://www.lavasoftusa.com/support/download/ and use it to remove parasites.

Look at processes in Task Manager. It is normal to have a number of Svchost.exe process entries appearing in Task Manager. For the process generating the high usage how is the User described? Next whilst Task Manager is showing high usage change from the Process Tab to the Application Tab. Then select each running Application in turn, right click and select "Go to Process" and see if you can identify the application causing the high usage.

Next select Start, Administrative Tools, Services. Compare the list of services with those shown as Started and for each in turn stop the service and observe the effect. If the CPU usage in Task Manager continues or something stops working restart the service. When you have found the likely cause i.e. the CPU usage stops then post details of what you have found.

Do you have Office XP and / or Norton Anti- Virus 2004?

Thank you for trying to help, but I think you replied to
the wrong post. In my original question I said I had
Mcafee virus scan that is updated. I also said I have ad-
aware that is updated so why would I download it again?
I am using XP home and No I don't have norton I have
Mcafee.
I have run a full system scan. I have also run ad-aware
and spybot and I've fixed the problems they found.
I am not trying to be rude I just don't think you read my
entire message.
My original questions still stand.

No I replied to your post. Regrettably, unless you looked for obscure clues -like the number 2 in the subject box, it was not obvious that it was a repost. If you want people to be aware of what has gone before, repost to the same thread and do not start a new one.

I agree the reference to Norton was probably pointless. However, McAfee causes it's own problems. What McAfee utilities are enabled to run in the background?

Notwithstanding the use of Adaware and Spybot it is unfortunately still possible that undetected spyware is the problem. Do not rule it out! You might try:

Hijack This!
(also CWS Shredder)
http://mjc1.com/mirror/hjt/
http://www.merijn.org/downloads.html

Perhaps what is more pertinent! Did you try the process I suggested namely:

Look at processes in Task Manager. It is normal to have a number of Svchost.exe process entries appearing in Task Manager. For the process generating the high usage how is the User described? Next whilst Task Manager is showing high usage change from the Process Tab to the Application Tab. From my reading of what you have said you may have stopped short of investigating all of the information Task Manager has to offer! You have not identified the application!!!

Are you using Office XP?
