Viewer asks for password

I have used the "package for cd" option from PPT 2003. I have created .pps
files, with a modify password. Yes, it is a "modify" password NOT an "open"
password.

I have a user trying to open them by running pptview.exe, then selecting a
presentation. It then asks him for a password, with no "read-only" option. I
cannot reproduce this problem.

Has anyone experienced this before?

Thank you.

The user must not be using the Viewer. How are they opening the file? Are they
double clicking it? Do they have PowerPoint installed on the system?

The PowerPoint Viewer ignores a "modify" password. You DO get that message with
an Open password. Double check that again. Are you sure that you didn't assign
both?

1. Yes, double checked, triple checked that open password is empty.

2. He opens by clicking on the pptview.exe file. This brings up an Open
dialog. He then clicks on a .pps (it happened with .ppt file also), then
clicks the Open button. He says he gets a dialog asking for a password. Only
Ok and Cancel options.

3. I can't reproduce it on any of my machines - all works fine. I'm hoping
to hear back to see what OS he has, and to see if he has Powerpoint
installed.

Thanks,
Bill

I'm using 2002 so maybe this doesn't apply but..
With same type of password in the file
the dialog box opens with THREE choices
OK Cancel and Read only
Are you sure he's just not trying to weasel
the password out of you?

Bill is talking about the PowerPoint 2003 Viewer. Are you saying that when you
open the Viewer with a Modify password the Viewer asks you for the password? I
think you misread his post.

Sonia, You're right, he is talking about opening the file with the viewer,
but..

I'm hoping
to hear back to see what OS he has, and to see if he has Powerpoint
installed.

I really do think that the user must be trying to open it by clicking on the
file icon, or opening it directly in regular powerpoint, in order to get the
dialog box.

In which case, he will get 3 choices (including the read-only), not 2 choices.
So there really shouldn't be a problem, even if the user is opening the file
the wrong way.

Sorry for any confusion.

Pete
