Video Problems

I am at the end of my tether.

When I bought my computer it had 512MB RAM and a Radeon 9200 graphics card
which I ahve upgraded recently due to m computer telling me that it is not
compatible with Windows Media Centre.

A couple of months ago i noticed that videos started to jog and the
pixellation was very evident. Feint gridlines appear on the screen when
viewing videos.

When viewing pictures they seem to be fine and the problem doesn't occur.

Please advise what could be the problem.

Thanks

If this occurs with only one player, let's download and install Media
Player Classic and see if the problem occurs with that. It may help in
diagnosing the problem. Also, it would help to know what type of files
you are playing and their attributes (such as bitrates, frame rates).

Hi and thanks for the quick response.

It occurs in all programs i use, from Windows Media Player 10, to PowerDVD,
and quicktime. When i open my Media Centre it says "You video card or drivers
are not compatible with Media Centre" and Media Centre itself is sluggish and
has invisible icons.

I've heard it may be the TV card tuner and/or its drivers but i can't seem
to locate any updates for a Harmonics (conexant) CX2388x TV Card.

Could it be the DVD decoder?

Well, this goes beyond a "mere" bad display. I am not familiar with
MCE, but I think I read some things that implied that not all hardware
is supported, and that MCE 2004 and 2005 hardware support may differ.
Are you sure that your graphics card is supported by MC2004? Are you
using the correct/latest driver for this card? Have a look at ATI's
site, just in case.

You may want to try to locate drivers under another name that use the
same chipset. This approach sometimes works. Did you try
http://www.driverguide.com by the way? It is not always easy to
navigate through this site but there are quite a few things there and
perhaps something that you can associate with your tuner.

Having said that, unless you are having problems only with video that
you captured via your tuner, then I don't see why it should be the
culprit. But, it's not impossible.
Could it be the DVD decoder?

I am doubtful, given the fact that you have problems with DVDs as well
as Quicktime, and these use completely different CODECs.

Sorry, I can't think of anything more concrete. I think I'd first try
to ensure that MCE2004 supports the Sapphire Radeon X700 and that no
driver updates are available. Otherwise, perhaps an upgrade to MCE2005
is required.
