Video hangs intermittently after WMM converts to DV AVI

System: Sony R810, 1 week old, 3.4ghz, 250mb HDD, 1 gig RAM, XPsp2
Media version.

Sony 8mm capture is from analog inputs and only will come in under
Click To DVD, uses Giga Pocket engine. Saves temp files as mpeg's.

Import mpeg into WMM. Edit two short clips (testing - about 25 second
total run time), then export as DV AVI (since Click To DVD only
imports AVI files from HDD). Now exported file hangs the video for 1/2
second 2 or 3 times in 25 second file. Sound is ok. Each build to
convert to DV AVI has hangs in assorted places. Doesn't hang in the
same place on every file build/convert. WMM saved files (without AVI
convert) play on all players without hanging. It's clearly only after
the DV AVI convert export.

First noticed this on a burned DVD playback on home table top player.
Then as repeated attempts were made to figure this out, I found that
once WMM saved the file as an DV AVI, any player on the computer shows
the hanging problem, even hangs in Click To DVD preview function
(before the DVD is burned). Anti-virus, fire wall and all unnecessary
programs are shut down. Hard drive does not have any activity when
idle.

These clips and the assembled WMM files play fine on other video
player programs, except DV AVI exported files from WMM. Click To DVD
will assemble these clips together and burn them to the DVD with 100%
accuracy (no hangs at all). It's only the files exported under WMM DV
AVI that hang.

I really like the WMM edit format and I'm not into spending the next 3
months trying to learn Adobe's program.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance for your time.

WindowsMovieMaker does not, nor is it supposed to, edit MPEG videos very
well.

Can you not capture the files as AVI or WMV?

If not, have you tried using a third party software such as TMPGEnc to
reencode the MPEG files to AVI?

Thanks for your input Cari.

I thought I was "importing" the files into WMM as mpegs. Click To DVD
only has one method of saving captured clips. They are saved as a
"project". There are no options to save the clips directly to a file
that I specify. When I go to the file directory that the project is
save in, I find my files of saved captured clips as mpegs ( serial
numbered names - it can be confusing to find my clips, but that's
another problem all together).

Although this computer has about a zillion ways of importing video,
only the Click To DVD has options that will recognize the analog
inputs. It seems that the FireWire input is the standard used by most
programs. I'm ok with buying a new camera, if that's what it takes. I
would prefer to use what I've got though.

I read something last night about shutting down the AutoSave function
of WMM to help save cpu and hdd resources. I haven't seen where that
option is. Do you think I should be trying this tip/trick?

I've not used Click To DVD..... did you check PapaJohn's website at
www.papajohn.org as he has some very useful information about trying to edit
MPEG files.

Last night I tried it a bit differently. I imported analog video with
Click To DVD. Imported the MPEG file(s) made by Click To DVD into WMM.
Saved the files in WMM. Closed WMM. Reopened WMM and opened the newly
saved files. I performed some fade edits and saved as DV AVI. Imported
the AVI into Click To DVD. Now they play without hanging frames. Tried
this several times with assorted clips, all came out ok.

So it looks like the trick is to first save the imported files so that
WMM can then work with "native" files.
