video flicker

Hi! I have a Sapphire ATI chip 9600XT 256 MB video card
installed with a 3GHz cpu on an ASUS P4P 800E motherboard
and 512MB of ram. My question is, when I play a PC game
why does my screen flicker between winXP and this mostly
when starting any game? Also, I get error messages that
XP wants me to report when playing games from time to
time.Does this have to do with my monitor being old?
Please explain, thanks.

OK a couple of steps to go through.

Make sure you've got the latest video drivers for your card, these can be
downloaded from www.ati.com. Once you've downloaded them uninstall your
existing drivers if you have any, these can be removed from Add/Remove
programs from the control panel.

If you've got none listed just go ahead and run the .exe you downloaded from
ATI.

If you've got some listed, uninstall them and reboot your machine, press F8
several times just before you would get the Windows screen, and choose Safe
Mode. This will bring you into "safe mode" which is a minimalist
environment designed for troubleshooting - or in this case ideal for
updating drivers, so go ahead and run the .exe and reboot your machine.

Also head over to the Asus website and download any chipset drivers for your
motherboard. Install them as above.

3rd party applications can also cause weird "switching" between the desktop
and a full screen window. Shut down any other applications when running a
game, it may be solve the issue, it'll also help free up memory and give
more system resources to the game which is always a good thing.

I wouldn't think so.
