Video cards not being recognised? (Reposted)

Hi,

I recently started to have a variety of small problems with XP, so
decided to re-install over the top of my existing installation,
preserving most of my settings. I seemed to get everything back and
working properly, except for the video.

Device Manager showed no Display Adaptors listed, not even a section
for display adaptors and the display runs very slowly. I ran the driver
install which came with my video card a Nvidea Geforce MX400 and with
some difficulty managed to get the card to show as a yellow ! in the
Display Adaptors list, but the screen still runs very slowly as before.

I then fitted yet another AGP video card, the predecessor to the above
which had been an hardware upgrade, and again saw a yellow ! after
installing the driver for that one, plus slow display.

Both report a 'Code 10' error and I can set both up at 1024x768.

For test purposes, I then installed a separate copy of XP on another
partition, which quite happily installed the video drivers correctly
for that copy of XP.... Everything worked just as it should.

Both have in the past worked well without problems and I have
reinstalled XP at least once before without any video card problems.
Where do I go from here to repair my original copy of XP?

Is there some way to remove all of the hardware drivers and get XP to
redetect all my hardware?

Thanks in advance for any replies...........

Try R.clicking the adapter,properties,chk whats installed and/o
problems it gives for the yellow. You can also go to run,type:Msinfo3
Chk hardware, problem devices. If it was my problem,i'd uninstall all vide
card software, shutdown, remove the card, run the on-board video (reconfigure BIOS
let xp get it running, then eventually, disable onboard thru device mgr,shut-down,instal
card,go to windows update, let it install it.

Done that it produces the 'Code 10' error.

I have tried uninstalling several times, tried several other cards in
its stead and all produce the same problem. It does not have an
on-board video card.

The only way I have found to get the Display item listed is to force
the drivers in via the Nvidea CD and it always shows the yellow mark
against it. The only exception was the separate installation of XP on
another partition, just to prove I was not suffering an hardware fault.

Code 10 simply implies that the drivers aren't installed or the card
isn't
seated properly. Good luck!

Hi, Harry. Just thought I'd add something to the mix - your agp slot may
be damaged or just not working properly. Since you got the same
problems with a different card, perhaps it's time to replace the
motherboard.

Cheers,

Thanks, but as stated above the card and drivers work fine in my second
installation on a separate partition. This tends to prove the hardware
is fine.
