Vicious circle (Opening Excel attachment)

GARY

When I get an e-mail with an attached Excel worksheet, I have three
choices: "View", "Open" and "Save As".

When I chose "Open" or "Save As", Firefox displays a box labeled
"Opening", it says that the attachment is a Microsoft Excel Worksheet
and asks me what Firefox should do with this file ("Open With" is
already selected and the box contains "Microsoft Excel for Windows
(default)".

When I click OK, Windows Installer starts, then a box labelled
"Microsoft Office 2000 SR-1 Professional" is displayed which says that
"The feature that I'm trying to use is on a CD-Rom or other removable
disk that is not available".

When I click "Cancel", the "Open With" box is displayed. When I
scroll down to and click on Microsoft Excel, the Windows Installer
starts again (same as above).

How do I open the Excel worksheet attachment?
