The classic method of copy protection with VHS tapes involved
the sync track. If one had studio gear, it was just a simple
matter of copying whilst using an external sync generator or
Gen-Loc.

Macrovision ?

Macrovision is a technique that fools the AGC circuitry on the standard RCA
input of a VCR which is why the picture would go dark from time to time and
at some points even go to a blue screen.

You could try using 2 VCR's. Play the VHS tape in one, run the ch.2/3/4 rf
output to the rf input of another VCR, and use the video/sound out form the
second VCR.

nice idea, but one issue. i just need another vcr for this. i only
have one.

A TV that has output jacks is another option. RF into the TV the use the
outputs on the TV.
