VHP retail upgrade fails on VHB OEM

I have a Compaq that came with Vista Home Basic. I bought the retail version
of the Home Premium upgrade at BestBuy. I've tried installing it twice now
and the same thing happens each time.

After the second reboot, the system goes through the "Please wait while
Windows prepares to run for the first time" stage, then fails with a message
that the setup was unable to configure something on my system - it doesn't
say what. Says I should restart the machine and run Setup again. There's a
"Restart" button, but it doesn't do anything - I have to manually restart the
machine by powering it off. Fortunately, the rollback to VHB appears to work
fine.

I set my AV software to sleep before running the install. Anything else I
should disable for a successful upgrade? Will Citrix's GoToMyPC cause
problems with the upgrade? That's the only other thing I can think of that's
running on the machine that might cause problems.

Oh, and I guess I should mention that I downloaded and ran the Upgrade
Advisor and it says my system should be fine with the upgrade.

How much Graphics, and how much RAM.

If you are using Basic, I would say that you have 512MB RAM; which is
insufficent for Premium.
And that 512 of RAM would be shared with Graphics in a Compaq

Premium requires 128MB of dedicated Graphics, and 1G of RAM to run properly

Good guess, but incorrect. It's got a gig of RAM and an NVidia Geforce
6200LE with 128 megs. It came with 512 MB and integrated graphics, but I
upgraded it.
