very strange behavior....

hello,

I have a strange behavior on servers in an AD environnement.
Sometime, desktop come unresponsive and contextual menus stop to works.
The menu appear, but only cut, paste and property works fine. Double-clic on
icons don’t launch apps, start menu is inoperant and so on.
If I try to access to device property (desktop property for example), i get
the message “Access to the specified device, path, or file is deniedâ€. Same
message when i clic on device icons in control panel (I launch it by running
control.exe...). But if i launch this function by running rundll32 command,
it works fine ! same thing for MMC or explorer....it must be launch from
execute command, or in a cmd windows.
In explorer, double-clic in right windows are inoperants. I just can expand
folder in left pane.
It’impossible to create shortcut on desktop (access denied, create error
16389). Therefore, access to user profile is OK, and login with differents
user don’t change this behavior. Only a boot can restore normal operations.

The more strange is that this behavior jump from one server to another,
whith an hazardous frequency of 10 minutes to one day.... (on DC or members)

I tried to desactivate GPO’s or delete profiles without success.
Filemon utility dont show access violation. Regmon show numerous “not found
keysâ€...
Winlogon and Rundll32 process never start during problem. It seems that
explorer never call them... but I don’t know if that ‘s an abnormal behavior.

Machines are two Windows 2000 SP4 DC in a legato cluster, two W2K SP2 citrix
member server, and other different member in w2K sp4. all are IBM eseries.

before calling a wizard or an exorcist..... if somebody has an idea....

thanks

Is your anti virs software upto date? In cases like this I would recommended
powering down Network switches/hubs and running full anti virus software on
each server. To be sure..
