Very Slow Response When Updating Contact Info

Outlook 2003 on XP

There is a user in our office who is having a problem with very slow
response when updating a contact. For example, if he adds or changes a
phone number and then moves to another field or does a "Save & Exit", it can
take up to 30 seconds for Outlook to start responding again. The hour glass
is being displayed, so it seems like it is trying to do something. None of
the other users in the office appear to be having this problem. The
contacts he was modifying when this problem appeared are in a sub-contact
folder under his normal contacts list.

Any ideas what might causing this and how to deal with it?

Thanks!!

Are you on an Exchange server? Does this happen for new contacts as well?
Has the mailbox ever been moved? If so it might be caused by the Calendar
shortcut that is attached to resemble his/her birthday still points to the
old location. In previous versions of Outlook this shortcut was added to the
contact when the birthday information was entered. Removing the shortcut
should speed it up again.

Robert,

Here is what we found:

Are you on an Exchange server? No
Does this happen for new contacts as well? Not really
Has the mailbox ever been moved? No

The interesting thing we found was that the only fields that would cause the
problem are phone fields. We started with a new contact and started filling
in fields. The fields that caused problems were always phone fields; add
e-mail - returned right away, add web site - ditto, address - no problem,
phone numbers - delay in return.

Hypothesis: Something tied to Windows Telephony. Either there is a problem
processing the phone fields relative to the local settings. For some reason
it is trying to dial the number and timing out, or something like that. The
machine does not have a modem and is networked in our workgroup.

Perplexing!
