VERY slow printing

D

Dennis

I have just done a clean install of XP Pro. Computer is 850MHz with a gig
of ram and 8 gigs of space for the "C" partition.

I connected my Epson CX5200 inkjet and it works fine.

I then connected my NEC 870 Superscript laser printer. It is a parallel
printer, so connected to an LPT port. With my laptop (WindowsME), the
printer works perfectly... first page in 8 seconds and second, third fourth,
etc.. pages begin printing even before the first page is delivered to the
tray.

Now comes XP Pro!

The NEC prints the first page (from Word for Windows) in 32 seconds. Then
the next page of a multi-page documents starts printing 8 seconds AFTER the
printer has "shut-down". This is frustrating and as a small business
TOTALLY UNEXCEPTABLE!

I spent the last 4 days trying to find an honest solution, and nothing has
worked. I even found that Microsoft no longer supports LPT ports (Thank you
very much Bill), so I took the advice from the Microsoft recommended
"workaround" and paid $65 for a "USB to Parallel" cable. Now have the NEC
on a USB port.... Still does not work.

I then tried to print a one-page Excel worksheet.... takes 1 1/2 minutes!

I have, per articles from the "MVP" pages removed the drivers and made sure
that the WinXP Pro drivers were reinstalled.

I can't waste any more time on this, PLEASE HELP ME
Thank you,
Dennis

Open your Control Panel and click on the "Add Hardware" icon.
The "Add Hardware Wizard" will appear.

1. Click on Next and place a dot next to "Yes, I have already connected the hardware".
2. Click Next and scroll all the way down to "Add a new hardware device".
3. Click once to highlight it and click Next.
4. Place a dot next to "Install the hardware that I manually select from a list (Advanced)".
5. Click Next and scroll down to "Printers", click once to highlight and click Next.
6. Place a dot next to "Use the following port" and click Next.
7. In the "Install Printer Software Screen", on the left side scroll down to "NEC"
and click once to highlight, then in the right-side scroll down to
"NEC SuperScript 870", click on it to highlight and click Next to install the software.

Peter:

Thank you SO much!!!

That did it, and you have ended the 5th day of frustration. I appreciate
you and your post more than you can imagine.

Hi,

Try the HP laser Printer drivers.

See the link:http://www.davidgagne.net/archives/005731.shtml

Scroll down to Q.24

Answer for SHAH, First of all thank you to everyone who suggested the HP
LaserJet IIP driver. My NEC 870 prints with its normal speed now that I use
the HP LaserJet IIP driver. Shah, you have to go into control panel, then
printers, and delete the nec 870 printer. Next you manually add a new
printer (rather than let the computer find it) and choose HP as the printer.
It will then give you many driver options. Choose HP LaserJet IIP driver.
Hope that helps.

Hi, Dennis.

I'm glad to see that you have solved your problem with the advice that Peter
gave you. I just want to correct one statement in your post, because others
might read it here and believe it:
I even found that Microsoft no longer supports LPT ports

NOT true! I've been running WinXP Pro for nearly 3 years - over 2 years on
my new EPoX 8K3A+ motherboard with AMD XP2000+ CPU. My old HP LaserJet 5L
has always worked just fine on my LPT1 port. (That is, when it works. The
5L has well-known paper-feeding problems that resulted in a class-action
settlement, but that's another story that has nothing to do with the LPT
port.)

How did you "find out" this erroneous information? Where did you learn
about "the Microsoft recommended 'workaround'"?
