Very slow explorer when cable modem active

I

Ian B

OS XPPro Pre SP2
I switched my cable modem (Motorola SB4200) from a USB connection to a NIC
connection (3Com Etherlink XL).
Also another PC connected via LAN.
After startup I can browse local drives with no problem.
After some time (2 hours~) something triggers explorer to browse the
internet when I want to look at a folder list on a local drive.
This invokes a 90 second delay. If I disable network to cable modem
connection, or reboot, browsing become normal for a while.
I have "Automatically search for network folders and printers" disabled,
just on the off chance.

Any suggestions much appreciated
TIA

Ian B
