VERY slow computer

T

Tom Brown

I have read many of the other messages about slow computers and I have
installed and run the following programs:

Spysweeper
AdAware
Spybot Search & Destroy
CWShredder

I use Kaspersky Anti-Virus Personal as my AV program.

But, my computer seems to have a mind of it's own some times. I can barely
use it because it takes MINUTES to get it to do anything .... like refresh
the screen. BTW, I am on a Dell Pentium 4 laptop with 512 Ram. I am using
XP Home, SP2.

I find the disk "churning" and when I check the Processes in Windows Task
Manager, I find one program which seems to be hogging my system. It is
MSIMN.EXE.

Here are some of the numbers.

CPU Time: 1:05.42
Mem Useage 401,000K
VM Size 533,832K
I/O Reads 370,598
I/O Writes 1998

This seems like a lot of activity for a program that I don't even recognize.
Any comments will be appreciated.

That's Outlook Express - Are you using Instant Messenger service ?
Or perhaps you've got a Trojan Horse that is using your system as a
Spam Bot.

button/see if there is anything there that you dont need to have starting
up/if you stop anything
from loading the next time you start computer it will say you have changed
system config just click dont show again..

Well, I think I have ruled out the Spybot or Trojan Horse by running all the
software I listed on the original email.

Yes, I do use AIM and Yahoo Instant Messenger. Could that be causing this?

Thanks,

Tom

Sounds like you've been trojaned and the trojan is sending millions of spams
from your machine.

Don't worry; presently your ISP will terminate your connection and the
trojan will have no way of sending spam. Your machine should then speed back
up.
