Very Large Files

Our company uses an application called Hyperion to download information from
Oracle into Excel. In order to download information I am having to use a
template devloped by Corporate. After the download, the file is quite large,
usually in the 5-7Mb range.

In order to decrease the file size I highlight the entire worksheeet and
then Copy - Paste Special - Values. Even after doing that, the still remains
at the 5-6Mb range and this becomes a problem when I try to email the file.
After doing the Copy-Paste Special I would have expected this file to be way
under 1Mb in size. I am thinking that there must be a hidden file or files or
that there is a macro some where which I can't get rid of.

Can anyone help me identify exactly why the file remains so large and then
how I can decrease the file size.

Thanks.

Hi,

I don't have Hyperion, but I suspect it downloads data, not formulas. In
which case doing Paste Special Value will have little or no effect.

If there are any bit map graphics in the file I would replace them with
JPG's or get rid of them all together.

Maybe the file just has a lot of data?

Which Hyperion application are you using? Hyperion Enterprise with HPVAL
formulas, Essbase ad hoc retrievals, HFM (System 9) using SmartView, or ??
SmartView uses hidden objects to store information.

Try selecting all the data on your worksheet (not the entire worksheet).
Paste it as values in a NEW workbook. Then you can copy the same range and
paste special >> formats to copy the formatting (except the column widths).
Save the new workbook and see if it's a lot smaller.

Hope this helps,

I've seen files as large as 80 Meg result from a download of monthly data
from Oracle. I wouldn't call 5-7 Meg very large. Am I in the minority?
