Versatility of 16x PCI-Express slot

Is it possible to plug something other than a video card into the 16x
PCIe slot, such as a 4x or 8x server raid adapter/disk controller?

And are there any good PCIe SATA RAID controllers out there? 8 port RAID5
preferably.
