VCR to DVD

I have recently installed a DVD writer and wish to transfer some of my VCR
VHS video cassettes onto DVD - as these are analogue I have been told that I
must install a video capture card with firewire port. Can anyone explain
exactly what I need to produce modest DVD recordings.

You need a fireware port on your computer and a Canapus ADVC-100
capture device or equivalent and a lot of disk space. You will need
about 178 mb of disk space per minute of Video recording plus extra
workspace. Next, you will need software that can convert the .AVI
file you created to MPEG format. Microsoft's Movie Maker 2 does a good
job with any needed editing. A computer with a fast processor will
speed things along. Then you will need software to compile and burn
the DVD such as MYDVD or NERO. Some of the burning software will also
take .AVI files directly but they don't always do a good job.

A firewire port is for digital connections (camcorder etc).
What you need is an anologue video (AV) capture card. Go
to Pinnacle Systems web site. They have various options,
both internal and external.
There are other options, search the web for AV Capture
Cards.
