vague grid-like marks printing in PS...scanning error?

Scanned at 300dpi on the Nikon V. After working in Photoshop with the
image, it renders a vague gridlike pattern especially on skies. It looks
like an out of focus mesh screen was laid overtop. It's more pronounced
when printed. It appears after I've done some processing such as *levels,
*color balance *unsharp mask.
I'm selecting skies for darkening.
Should I be scanning at a higher resolution when I plan on rendering in PS?

My assumption is that this is caused by the interpolated low-resolution
scanning (300 ppi on a Coolscan V) and the unsharp masking.
Try scanning at a higher resolution that is a divisor of 4000 (the
scanner's nominal resolution), e.g. 400 or 800, then downsampling to 300
ppi and then USM.

It worked.
And the scans from the Nikon V are stunning....I must say.
I'm printing heavily cropped images that put the photo lab's to shame.
