USMT - large migration, use in this situation ?

Hello,

I am trying to determine weather this tool is the right choice to use in the
following situation:

Have a few thousand desktop pc's running W2K. All users have roaming
profiles on W2K servers. Desktop operating system to be upgraded to XP via
remote deployment (complete wipe and reimage). Roaming profiles have
standard exclusions in ntuser.ini. Some users share machines, generally all
machines will have more than 4 users logged onto them in their lifetime, some
a lot more. One user for example may have a profile and/or data on multiple
machines.

It has been determined that a search of the local machines for files of
known file types may be best, as there are 100's of applications in use.

Should usmt be used in a roaming profile situation ? Can it effectively
backup required file extensions and dump them in a specific location ?.

From my initial testing, it appears to be geared more towards local profiles
being moved onto new machines and seems clumsy at backing up specific file
extensions for multiple users.

Any ideas ?
Thanks.

Bob.
