using XP for saved files from 98

I have several floppy diskettes with information saved in Microsoft Word from
Windows 98. I know there is a way to use my XP version to open up the 98
files, but I cant remember how. Can anybody help me jog my memory on doing
this?

Microsoft Word...
Windows 98..
Windows XP..
Office XP..

All different products.

Windows 98 with Office 97 or Office 2000, Office XP installed creates the
same files as Windows XP with Office 97, Office 2000 or Office XP.. Office
is the application that creates the file.. Windows 98/Windows XP is the OS
it is running on.

Copy your floppy disk contents to a directory on your hard drive (C:\,
Desktop, My Documents, etc) and open the file in your installed Word
application.

You'll need to install Microsoft Word in your Windows XP computer.

If you mean you have Office XP installed, then the version of Word installed with that version should work fine with the older Word documents. If you mean can Windows XP open those files, then the answer is maybe. WordPad comes with Windows, and can open many .doc files, but not all if they use macros and/or VBA scripts.

The obvious answer is to buy and install MS Word on your XP machine. A
cheaper alternative (if you only need to read the docs, not update
them) is to get the free Word viewer from MS
(http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...87-8732-48D5-8689-AB826E7B8FDF&displaylang=en)

Another alternative is to get Open Office (www.openoffice.org) a free,
open-source office suite that can read and write MS Word (and other MS
Office) files.

Office XP is the version below Office 2003 - so XP should certainly be able
to open Office XP (a.k.a Office 2002) documents.

When you say "my XP version," I assume that implies that you have
a newer version of Word installed on your Windows XP computer.

If so, just open them--insert the diskette, navigate to a:\ in My
Computer or Windows Explorer, and double-click the file. That
newer version, regardless of which it is, should have no trouble
opening Word files from your 98-era version, whichever it is.
Nothing special is required.
