Using xcopy to clone hard drive?

O

Oliver Costich

I want to put a larger hard drive in my XP Pro system. Both the old
and new drives are installed in the system, and the new drive has been
partitioned to have the same number of partitions as the old one. I
can use xcopy with the /s/e/h option and this works for all but the C:
partition. All I get is:

C:NTUSER.DAT
Sharing violation

How do I get this to work?

Use imaging software to clone the drive.
Click on or copy and paste the link below into your web browser address bar.

I have had great success with Ghost 2003, Drive Image and BootIt NG, I have
heard of people having problems with all three. I don't know of any software
that works 100% on all computers. All are very capable.

Some system files cannot be copied within XP.
Use for instance savepart http://www.partition-saving.com (free) in a boot
dos floppy to copy the whole partition.
After boot on the copied XP its letter must be changed to its install
letter.
See details at http://perso.numericable.fr/gjullien/copy_xp.htm

I really miss the ability to xcopy c:\ to d:\. I did this every
Friday
with a shelf HDD. I have found no way to do this with NT5. I
had to break down and buy a copy of Drive Image 7. It kind
of pushes my button that I now have to pay for a utility to back
up my Hard Drive.

Has anyone used the Western Digital one to successfully create an
exact cloned drive that is bootable and larger than the original?

Thanks
Joe

Hi
I had to break down and buy drive image too! Of course, it worked
right off the bat...as it should.
Theoretically, WD's Drive Utility should work too, but their tech
people did not make me feel like it was going to be easy and clean.

Re the backup, I use Second Copy to do the backup and it works just
fine and is pretty inexpensive. I have gone to specialized backup
software and found it to be just fine in order to make up for what
should come with the damned system! BackRex for outlook express does
the job for both email and IE favorites.

I guess I could have opted for the backup that comes with XP, but
chose not to.

As much as I dislike the antics of Symantec and Intuit, their products
come with backup embedded. Nice easy feature.

In my business, the OE is a big hurdle.

Anyway.....
Joe
