Just switched to office 2003 professional and having fun setting it all up.

Main problem is when I start Word, I get two Word tabs on the task bar, one
contains a blank document and the other is empty. The empty one always opens
on top and i have to minimise it to access the document. I cannot close it
whilkst my document is open.

Any ideas

Some syetm info

using Asus P5LD2 deluxe MB
Pentium D processor
2 gig DDR2 667mhz
Matrox parhelia graphics card with two monitors
Windows XP professional

Hi Mike,

this "feels" like an Addin of some sort. If you hold CTRL while starting Word
does the behavior go away?

Cindy thanks for your response

The answer in short is no. If I try to sttart word holding the ctrl key down
word detects that I am holding the key down and asks me if I want to start it
in safe mode. If I select no then it acts in the same way, if I select yes
then only one word application opens but there is no document in it.

In terms of add ins I am using Acrobat Professional 7, but have been using
this for some tiome with office xp pro and no problems.

OK, next question :) HOW are you starting Word? Double-clicking a document?
Clicking on a Word icon?

If no document is opening as the default this is highly unusual. My first thought
would be that the shortcut you're using has the /n switch following winword.exe
(to suppress creation of a new document). If I know how you're starting Word, I
can tell you how to find the Properties to check this...

Cindy, thank you so much for your continued help.

Again ansa is short its the same both ways i.e if I double click on a
document or use an icon the same thing happens.

This is very very strange. If I explain what I get in a bit more detail it
may help.

If I open any word doccument (even a blank one) then on my task bar I get
two tabs. One of the tabs looks like a normal word document i.e. it has the
word logo and text on the tab (eg Document-1 Microsoft Word) hit this tab
and i get to my document and its all fully functional just as you would
expect.

The second tab just has the word logo on it and nothing else. If I hit this
tab I get, as best as I can describe, the background from word. i.e the blue
band at the top (but no toolbars or menu bar) and a light grey bar at the
bottom. The only items on this page are as follows

word icon (top left)
Minimise maximise and close buttons (top right) but the only button that
works is the minimise button.

If I right or left click on this page nothing happens

If i right click on the taskbar tab I get the option to close maximise
minimise size or move

and that is all I get.

Sounds crazy

Once again thankjs for your help

Hi =?Utf-8?B?TWlrZSBNY05pY2hvbGFz?=,

Well, right-click the icon, go to Properties and look at the end of the
entry in the "Target" box. Is it just winword.exe or does something come
after that?

If you weren't getting a "blank" Word window when booting in Safe Mode,
I'd be quite sure we're dealing with an Addin of some sort. The empty
window when booting in Safe Mode is what's bothering me...

If you start WINDOWS in Safe Mode do you see any difference (both with
normal start of Word, as well as with Safe Mode)?
