When I click My Computer, the "torch" seems to take ages to search for
connected drives, perifirals etc. It normally takes up to 2 minutes to get
there. This is something new in my system.
Is there any reason why this shopuld now happen? I did a thouruogh scan,
defragmentation, clean etc. No luck. Can anyone help?

With what did you scan? What has changed between the time things worked
and the time they didn't? Install any software or hardware? To be sure
your computer is 100% malware-free:

If the machine is clean, try clean-boot troubleshooting to determine
what is running at startup:

Try this fix.
Go to START - RUN and type in
msconfig
In the msconfig window choose the "services" tab.
Scroll down until you find "Windows Image Acquisition (WIA)" and uncheck it.
Then restart your computer and check "My Computer" again.
If the problem is solved. Go to the Control Panel and select "Administrative
Tools"
Then got to the "Services" selection and scroll down to "Windows Image
Acquisition (WIA),
right-click and choose stop.
see the following for more information:

This is a problem caused by some scanner software.
