Using more than 4GB of RAM on Windows 2000 Server

We are running an application on a Win2K server machine, which had 4GB of RAM.

For performance reasons, I need to add a second service for the application,
but to do this I need extra RAM. We have added an extra 2GB, bringing the
total to 6GB, but the server can still only see 4GB.

I'm aware of the '/pae' switch in the boot.ini file, but it seems from what
I've read that Win2K server will only support 4GB even with this switch.

Can someone please confirm if this is true, and if so, then what options do
I have that are not going to destroy files created by the application in
various locations on the C: drive? Can I:

- upgrade (as opposed to install) to Win2K Advanced Server, which I
understand would allow me to use up to 8GB of RAM
- upgrade to Win2003 Server?
- any other possibilites?

Thanks in advance for any assistance - as you may have gathered I'm no
Microsoft expert.

Cheers.....John.

PAE is supported on Windows 2000 and later versions of Windows. However,
only Windows 2000 Datacenter Server; Windows 2000 Advanced Server;
Windows Server 2003, Enterprise Editon; and Windows Server 2003,
Datacenter Edition support the use of more than 4 GB of physical memory.

Unfortunately, there is no supported upgrade path from standard Windows
2000 Server to Windows 2000 Advanced Server or Windows Server 2003
Enterprise Edition. You will need to perform a new install of either
Windows 2000 Advanced Server or Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition.
