Using Internet Explorer Links

Am reposting this for grandfather who is 75 years old and has a sight
problem. A post was made by him to New Users yesterday about this problem.
Tried those suggestions but none resolved problem. When going to
Start/Programs/Internet Explorer, or to Tools/Internet Options/Home Page
setting under Gereral Tab where you click on Use Current or Default or Blank
the following occurs: No matter what is indicated for home page and using
Apply, the entry always reverts back to "my.yahoo.com". It will not change.
Also the MS Udate Site/Page always appears - not the selected home page under
Internet Options on any attempt to use an Internet Explorer link. The only
page/site that appears is Microsoft Update just as if it is clicked on under
the Start/Programs links. As mentioned any attempt to use links to Internet
Explorer activates the MS Udate Site and the home page setting does not
respond to "Use Current, Default or Blank. It always reads my.yahoo.com which
does come up when home page icon is clicked. Tried setting up new connection
(DSL) and no change. Did Adaware scan - no items reported. Ran a Kaspersky
virus scan - nothing there. All other programs and links work fine. Just
can't get IE to open home page setting instead of MS Udate Site. On a recent
beboot had a box message that referred to "mscoree.dll" but it did not remain
on desktop long enough for me to understand. Thank you for any interest and
help.

Try this...

Open Ad-Aware | Click the gear at the top | Type or paste your home page
address | Click Proceed to save the settings

Ad-Aware...

Default IE Pages
Default homepage: Ad-Aware SE uses the defined homepage when recovering from
a browser hijack

Read current settings from system: Changes the default homepage and default
search engine entries above to the current settings on your computer. This
option is an easy way for you to reset your defaults without having to enter
the paths manually

What is he using to start Internet Explorer? Is it the blue e (no white
background) or an internet shortcut (blue e on white background)?

If it is an internet shortcut - check the properties to see what website
the shortcut is pointed at. If the URL is for the Windows Update site,
that's why the web browser keeps showing that page.

If he is missing the special blue e icon on the desktop, it can be added:
Right click the desktop. Select Properties. Display Properties will appear.
Click the "Desktop" tab to bring that page into view. Click the Customize
Desktop button on this page. On the next screen that appears, mark the box
to show a shortcut for Internet Explorer. Click OK. The properties screen
should close and there should be a blue e (no white background) on the
desktop. That icon, when double clicked, should go to the home page that is
designated in Internet Options.

Beautiful. Home page set-up responds to current entry or changes. IE opens
the home page in address block. Glad I didn't try any Registry changes.
Again, thank you for the help and solution.

Thank you for taking my message and the response. Just prior to receiving
your message I did the Adaware procedure prescribed by Wesley Vogel. It
corrected the problem. Am saving and printing out you solution with his for
reference files. Really appreciate your help and so does the grandfather.

You're welcome and I'm glad to hear you were able to sort this with Wes'
advice. That means the problem was a little deeper than what I was
describing (a possible mixup with the IE shortcuts).
