Using images for icons

How can I use a GIF or JPG image for an icon in WIndows XP? When I want to
change an icon for a folder, it does not recognize any thing but an image
with the ICO suffx. Even if I change gif to ico, it doesn't recognize it as
an icon

For folders its easy. Stick the image you want in there and name it
"folder.gif", "folder.jpg", or "folder.bmp". As for actual icons, I dont
know. I know the "folder.gif" works cause I have all my ICP albums on my PC
with folder icons for easy selection

Use bmp format. This is windows internal format and icons are files filled with little bmps.

Easiest way: Use a third party icon utility like MicroAngelo, which allows for importing
image files and saving as .ico files.

Using both IrfanView and Paint, you can turn just about any .gif or .jpg
into an icon as well as constructing them from scratch. Perhaps not always
professional in appearance, but it depends upon how steady a hand you have
(and whether or not you use a trackball or a mouse). Perhaps MA is easier,
but the price is right on this combo.

It will not accept an compressed file like those. You can convert one
to a bmp (eg with Irfan View): Load it up, resize it as appropriate
for icons (Standard is 32 pixels square) , save as a .bmp and rename
with the ico extension
