USING FAT 32 FILES IN WIN XP

Is software available that would enable me to transfer documents and files
from a WIN 98 machine (FAT32 System) to a WIN XP machine (NTFS system) ? I've
read MS article 314097 and don't feel experienced enough to make the
transfer as outlined in that article. Most files to be transferred are .doc
files to be opened with MS WORD.

You don't have to change the files. Copy them to CD, floppy disk, zip
drive, external USB hard drive, or email them to yourself. Network the
computer together or mount the Windows 98 drive into the Windows XP
machine. Whichever method you use the file system doesn't matter,
Windows XP will be able to read your Windows 98 FAT32 files.

You can the transfer the files. You don't have to convert the orignal
FAT32 partition. The FAT32 or NTFS file system won't affect your
files. If you're still in doubt, just copy a few as a test. I've
transferred thousand of files from a Win 98 FAT32 to an XP NTFS
partition.

Easy way is to burn the files to a CD on your Win98 PC and then copy the
files from the CD to your NTFS partition.
KB314097 covers converting FAT32 to NTFS which you can't do as your Win98 PC
does not support NTFS.
The assumption is that you still want to keep your Win98 PC and just move
the files to your Windows XP PC yes?

I've copied some files to the XP machine using both a flash drive and a
floppy disc and the XP machine tries to load a page editor(or some name like
that) but won't open the .doc file. What am I doing wrong ?

I want to get rid of my WIN 98 machine but want some of the files transferred
to the newer WIN XP machine. I've moved some .doc files using a flash drive
and also a floppy disc but XP tries to load a PAGE EDITOR( ? ) app which it
can't complete loading. I don't know where that app comes from or why it even
appears. In any event, I can move the files but can't get them to open.

Not using WordPad, MS Word, WordPerfect, or Open Office?

There really is no such thing as a FAT file or a an NTFS file

Is the error message that you get when you try to open the file with MS Word
a secret? Without more information, it is hard to say what your problem is.

I also have never heard of a program called Page Editor, but one could
easily exist. It is certainly not part of XP.

Thanks for your help. I see now that all I have to do is open the file using
an XP app. When I tried to open the file automatically in XP,the FAT 32 file
searched for Windows WORD which doesn't exist in XP. That's why it made that
crazy search. Thanks to you, I can now transfer and open the files as I
should.

Word doesn't exist in *any* version of Windows. Word is a separate
application program, which can be bought either by itself or as part of
Microsoft Office. Once you have bought it, you can install it under WIndows
98, Windows XP, or oter versions of Windows.
