using a different mouse w/Op desktop 3000

I'd been using MS's Wireless Optical Desktop 5000 and wasn't really pleased
with the keyboard though I really like the IntelliMouse 2.0.

Having seen the new design of the 3000, I bought it. Being that both the
IntelliType and IntelliPoint software was the same, already installed
version 5.5, I figured I'd still be able to use the previous IntelliMouse
2.0.

Wrong. It (the IntelliMouse) isn't recognized either by trying to use it or
as newly installed hardware.

What step(s) might I have missed or messed up on to prevent me from using a
device I prefer?

Most wireless desktop kits, the mouse/keyboard are paired together with the
wireless receiver. If there is not way to switch the mouse on the 3000 kit,
then the mouse from the 5000 may not work at all.

BTW: This seems to a=only be true if you are not using a Bluetooth aware
wireless desktop. With the Bluetooth receiver, I believe that the mouse. and
keyboard, each negotiate their own pairing.

The previously installed 5000 setup didn't originally come with the
IntelliMouse Explorer 2.0 mouse. I added it. Gotta have those two extra side
buttons.

Maybe I lucked out, because besides false alarm battery warnings it
functioned fine.

As far as the newer hardware, I had noticed that there was a slight version
variance in the previous and new receivers: 'Wireless Optical Desktop
Receiver 3.0A' vs. 'Wireless Optical Receiver 3.1'

The IntelliMouse 2.0 wasn't recognized with either combination of receivers,
and none of the mice(?) and/or keyboards is Bluetooth. Does that mean I'm
SOL on the mouse of my choice? Final answer?

kidding. thanks.

If the Intellimouse had its own receiver then you might be able to use by
plugging in its own receiver. That will mean that you would have two mice on
the system: the with e 5000 desktop kit and the Intellimouse. There should
not be any conflict, unles both mice are PS/2 connection type units. You can
have one PS/2 and may USB mice (I have successfully ran my PC with one PS/2
and 4 USB mice.)

Just a thought Charlie but I use cordless mouse and keyboard and took
me weeks to realise why these werent being recognised by pcs that I was
fixing for other people.

I remembered that I had to use my original PS2 keyboard and mouse to
install the software for the wireless pair before WinXP recognised
them.

Might be worth a try.
