Users temporarily lose connection to mapped drives on 2k DC file server

This 2000 sp4 server is a DC in our domain and is a file and print
server.
Last week a couple users temporarily lost access to their mapped drives
to this server. It happened again yesterday afternoon. Their programs,
in this case word or excel would hang.
Roughly at the same time of users complaints yesterday i found this in
the event log on the server. By the time i go and look at their
computers, they can access the mapped drives again like normal.

Source: Service Control Manager, ID:7011 Desciption: Timeout (30000
milliseconds waiting for a transaction response from the cisvc server.
I know this is the indexing service but am not sure its related to the
users problems.

Any thoughts? It seems I can disable the indexing service, but I'm not
sure if that is the source of this problem.

thanks

You will never be free of problems as long as you use mapped drive letters.
forget the mapped drives and use UNC Paths. You can create a Shortcut to a
UNC path and keep it in the user's local My Documents folder. Since Office's
"File-->Open" usually opens to that location first, it would just appears as
a "folder" in the My Documents.
