Users- Denying access to programs

B

BP

Just getting to know XP, up from 98SE. Have clean installed it and have it
set up on new computer with 4 users, one administrator (that be me) and 3
restricted users. Now I want my office accounting program to be unaccessable
to everyone else but me. I've clicked on the program folder and got to the
sharing tab but the check box for making the folder private is grayed out.
There is nothing regarding this program in shared files anywhere. Now, if I
go into one of the other users and try to open the program it won't. This is
a good thing. Can I delete the program shortcut from the programs menu on
the start menu in each of the other users without it being deleted in my
profile? How can I load a program to only run in one person's profile but
not the others? How do I do the opposite when there are restricted users?

Hi BP,

Move the shortcut from the AllUsers folder to your own:

From:
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs

To:
C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Start Menu\Programs

To keep the folder private, you need to set permissions (you can only
privatize a folder that is housed under your local profile). How you access
permissions depends on whether this is Pro or Home. For Pro, go to the
Control Panel/Folder Options/View tab, uncheck the option for simple file
sharing. For Home, you must restart the system and hit F8 at boot to access
the option to enter Safe mode. Logon as administrator. Now, you will find a
security tab on the properties of the program folder. Access this and remove
priviledges for all but yourself (as an admin, you can retake this folder at
will, but limited users cannot).
