User profiles&settings when cloning XP Pro?

William Stokes

Hello,

Is there any good documentation how to setup and copy user profiles and
settings when cloning XP Pro PC's or can someone here help me.

Here's the list I want to configure as default when user first opens his PC.

-Remove all default XP IE favorites.
-Add 3 own IE favorites.
-Remove Windows Media Player10 shortcut from anywhere exept
Start-Programs-Accessories-Entertainment.
-Remove "Remote assistance" shortcuts completely.
-Setup Lotus Notes as E-Mail icon in start menu.
-Add Lotus Notes shortcut to desktop.

Rest is taken care with Group Policies.

I tried setting everything up in an normal user account and copy everything
to Default User or/and All Users profile. This works untill I do sysprep.
After sysprep the default IE favorites are restored mine are nowhere to be
found, Outlook Express is set up as E-Mail icon in start menu (even when OE
is removed from system), the Windows Media Player10 shortcut is all over the
place. Atleast the desktop shortcut's are still in place.

So help is needed...

Thanks
-Will

I ended up using NewSID from sysinternals to create a new
SID for each clone instead of using sysprep since it did a
bunch of stuff (as you found) that was not what I wanted.
Then, I used the method here
http://www.jsifaq.com/subn/tip6600/rh6623.htm
to enter the new key (I have 4 valid retail copies of
XP-Pro). Worked fairly well.

Forgot to mention -- this only works when all keys are for
the same version -- you can't mix and match home, pro
OEM etc. You still go through the activation/validation
routine, it just allows you an easy way to clone the systems
and keep your favorite options (unlike sysprep that KNOWS
what you really need ... )
