user name and password not being retained in WindowsMail

J

Judy F.

I have Vista 32bit sp2, IE8 and WindowsMail. I had this problem on my
XP/Outlook Express machine and found an answer, but can't find one for
WindowsMail. Please note that I have had this set-up for several months and
never incurred this problem. Even earlier today everything was working fine.

It looks as if I can send messages, but when I click on send/receive button
to receive messages I get a screen asking for my username and password. I
have it set to remember in 'tools' 'accounts', but it isn't remembering it.

Does anyone have a suggestion on how to fix it. I have POP3 and use
Embarqmail which is now called CenturyLink.

Thanks so much,
Judy F.

First, test your password by logging in to your provider's webmail:
http://webmail.centurytel.net/webmail/
If that works, it proves you have the correct username and password.
A likely reason for the username/password failing is account corruption.
One thing you should try as a possible quick fix is to delete that corrupted
mail account, restart Windows Mail, then recreate that account.

If that doesn't fix it, more drastic measures will have to be taken.
Which antivirus are you running?
As a minimum, email scanning in the antivirus must be turned off,
although that may not be sufficient to eliminate all bad effects.
In a worst case scenario, your antivirus may need to be uninstalled.

If turning off the email scanning function does not resolve your problem,
consider upgrading to Windows Live Mail, because it is less prone to
suffering bad effects from overly aggressive antivirus programs.

Email scanning in any antivirus must be disabled, for reasons
explained here:

Which antivirus are you running? Some of them cause problems with
Windows Mail over time.

Also, make sure your antivirus is not configured to scan emails.

I am also interested in what you mean by "Avast! meltdown". I use Avast and
I want to know about problems with it. I have not seen any other messages in
this newsgroup about a problem with it.

Hi Sam
On Dec. 3, 2009 at approx. 7 PM Pacific time avast sent out a false
positive.....I was on my computer and sent all the "trojans" to the virus
chesrt and cleaned them up...that deleted a lot of files that screwed up my
computer....I'm not he only one. Google avast false positive and see the
what happened...I still have problems....

PS I now can't log into my windows mail at all...:-(

Thank you.

In the future, it would help to not assume everyone knows about things like
that. In this group especially, there are a lot of people that are quick to
act on incorrect information and ask for help with a solution to a problem
when either the problem does not exist or the solution they want help with
is not a solution. So in this group especially if you assume other people
are aware of something unusual that has in fact happened and the others are
in fact not aware of it, you are less likely to get help. Terms such as
meltdown are often used by people over-reacting.

Based on past experiences, I trust Microsoft less. I believe you that the
Microsoft product is highly compatible and effective, but the Avast problem
was a mistake, correct? I don't trust Microsoft to never make a mistake.
Microsoft is certainly better than a few companies that show intentional
disregard of quality.

That is one reason why I shy away from third party security programs.
Switch to Microsoft Security Essentials:

It is 100% compatible!
