User Accounts Missing From Welcome Screen

Yesterday XP on my PC decided that the user accounts at the welcome screen
would disapear. There are two, both administrator accounts. Tried
"ctrl/alt/del" here, did get a login box but neither could not be accessed. I
used the repair option on the install CD which seemed to go through fine but
the user accounts on the welcome screen are still missing. Any clue as to how
I may be able to fix this?

Thanks,

Have you tried booting into Safe Mode, and confirming that the 'missing'
user accounts are still there? If they are still there, try changing the
password on one of them and see if you can then get into that account
after rebooting.

For what ever reason, using F8 during initial power up will not give me the
menu where you can chose to boot into safe mode. XP just boots right up to
the welcome screen where I get stuck because there are no user accounts
available to login to...
Very frustrating...

You shouldn't have run a repair install. Now you may not get them back. To
many people just throw the cd in and try to reinstall. This is not the way
to fix things in most cases, but anyway......
Usually the easy fix is to boot to safe mode, then do a system restore back
to a time when the users were there. The users almost always come back. I
seen this many times. But now that you did a repair install those system
restore points may be gone now. Give it a try and post back if the restore
points are gone because then we'll have to go another way.

Rather than just pressing the F8 key occasionally during the boot
process to get the boot menu, try holding the F8 key down continuously
during the boot process.

Because holding a key down continuously during the boot process will
trigger the stuck key error during the keyboard test part of the POST.

O.K... I was able to boot XP to safe mode. Still no users at welcome
screen. As stated earlier, /ctrl/alt/del will bring up the login box with
user name and password. But when I enter the user name(s) (administrator
accounts) that I created way back when, it does not recognize any of them.
Guest account not recognized either even though that account does not help me
even if I can get to the desktop. Oh yea also, booting from "last know good
configuration" does not bring back the user accounts at the welcome screen
either...

You have to log into the hidden administrator account. Sorry I should have
mentioned that.
Boot to safe mode, ctrl-alt-del twice on welcome screen, user name
administrator, password would be blank(nothing), unless you changed it.

administartor did not work at the welcome screen on a "normal" boot. Am I
safe to assume that administrator should work at the welcome screen when in
safe mode?

Thanks,

First check that the accounts exist still (Control Panel - User
accounts); if so, Use TweakUI - one of the XP Powertoys from (if you
have installed XP SP1)
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/powertoys.asp

If you have not installed SP1, the earlier version can be found at
http://download.microsoft.com/download/whistler/Install/2/WXP/EN-US/TweakUiPowertoySetup.exe

Once installed you will find it in Start - All Programs - Powertoys for
Windows XP
Its Logon page, check the required 'Show xxxx on Welcome screen' and
Apply
