Use computer as TiVo?

Jeff Malka

I have not yet really looked at TiVo but plan to do so. However, I was
wondering, since TiVo is primarily a HD with software, can't one do the same
thing with a PC? What additional equipment would one need.

You will need a video card capable of getting video feeds. When i looked
it up it was cheaper to get a TiVo or something similar.

While I'm sure it's possible, I haven't seen many articles on the web
about this for Windows machine ... but there is activity is this arena
for doing this on machines based on Linux. With some creative Googling,
you can find these articles and the software for download. Some of the
Linux magazines have had articles about this. A fast-moving area.

My video card does many of the funtions of TIVO, ATI AIW 9800 pro, and
you don't need a subscription service to use it.

But there should not be the subscription fee. Something to think about.

We have a machine which is our Tivo like machine. It runs Windows 2000 with
an ATI TVTuner card which set us back about US$80. The software to record
the TV programs came with the tuner card. Now we just need a bigger HD. :)

I'm sitting here right now building a MythTv server. A linux based PVR
so it's free software. Video capture card and large harddisk are the
main requirements, you don't need a high spec processor around 1Ghz
should be more than capable.

How is that working for you? I have heard that the picture quality
leaves something to be desired.
