I have a question regarding the HP laserjet 2420. For some reason when it
installed, it installed as a dot4usb printer and added 1284 driver to the
device manager instead of installing to one of the usb root hubs. I have 6
usb ports (4 on the back 2 on the front). I have usb mouse, keyboard, and
scanner. All are working properly. I used the uninstaller that comes with
the 2420 then reboot. Then I reinstall the driver first then attach the
printer when instrusted to do so but it still adds it as a dot4usb printer.
Now I have looked at other computers with the same printer and they install
on one of the usb root hubs and use port USB001 (virtual printer port for
usb). Well on the problem computer, it does not have USB001 listed at all.
Instead it creates and uses dot4_001. I have even gone as far as to
uninstall each usb controller. I am not sure what else to do. I am running
XP Pro w/ SP2. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

the 2420 is a Multifunction device (even if you did not purchase the
peripheral accessories). HP multifunction devices typically use the 1284.4
protocol stack (DOT4) due to the multiple data channel support on this
stack.

Is there a way to make it not use the 1284.4 stack? I have several other
2420s on different computers but this is the only one that installed this
way. The other ones installed like the hplj2300s. Once I plug up the usb
cable to the computer the found new hardware wizard comes up. Then I specify
where the drivers are. Once it found them, I had a couple options. One was
dot4 and the other is usb. This computer however automatically installs the
drivers without any interaction from me. Is there a way to force the
computer to ask me?

Your message says "I plug up the usb cable to the computer the found new
hardware wizard comes up", this is not the recommended way to install printers,
I have installed several of this model and I am almost certain that the
instructions from HP are to install the software first and plug the USB cable
in when the installer asks you to. Even if the HP instructions don't say that,
plugging the cable in first is fraught with difficulties with many printers. I
am not sure this is the cause of your problem but it's worth a try. Uninstall
the printer first of course.

Thank you for your reply. I actually tried both ways: plugging the usb cable
in before installing the drivers and installing the drivers first. Sadly
neither worked. After this morning trying again, I ened up switching
printers. I changed it to the hplj 2300 and now it has properly installed
the correct drivers. I am still going to work on the 2420 though. Just on my
computer now. I am determined to get it to install correctly.
