Does line depravation apply to USB cabling?

In example: Could I theoretically create a 50 foot long or more USB cable?

How about s-video? Same thing?

Here is the scenerio...
Our office is about 35-40 feet from our family room. I would like to setup a
home-theater box in the family room. I can't splurge right now, so I want to
do the next best thing. I am putting a tuner card in our computer soon. I
would like to run audio and video cables from the PC (in the office) to our
TV (in the family room) Also, I have a Microsoft IR remote (designed for
MCE/Vista). The receiver is USB, and has a 6' cable. I would also like to
run a USB cable along with the audio/video cables into the family room (if
this is even possible) We have TV cable into our office, to hook up the
tuner card. Essentially, this would work, as long as the USB cable is
possible. I know this seems like a lot, but I like PVR's and I also enjoy
tinkering. Any suggestions?

Thank you!

That is a poor way to describe what you are asking about.

Yes, but you cant just have one that long.

s-video is a different animal, essentially because it a one way system and
since its analog and not digital, you get some degradation of the signal with
any cable, more with longer cables, and you can conteract that with a better
cable too. The short story is that thats quite feasible length wise.

The max length for a simple USB cable is 5M. You have have 5 hubs
between 5M cables, and so get 30M, or even 25M with a single
cable with a slow speed USB device.

Yes, some do it that way.

Yeah, I use a PVR myself, tho I have it all in the one room.
Any suggestions?

Just try a long one and put a hub between two half that far if it doesnt work.

I appologize for the lack of proper wording. When it comes to explanations,
I'm rather poor. But that's why people such as yourself exist; to correct
people like me.

For Audio/Video purposes, do you suggest another route? (Besides building a
PVR box) It would bug the hell out of me if there was a timing or latency
issue with either one. However I decide to do this, hopefully it will be a
long-term solution.

I will try that. I assume the hub would have to be the powered type, so that
signal is "boosted" or atleast regulated?

Thanks for your help.

You are indeed.

Down, boy.

Nope, I should have been clearer that that was just
the theory and that it should be fine in your situation.
(Besides building a PVR box) It would bug the hell out of me if there was a timing or latency
issue with either one.

That isnt possible with s-video. The most that can happen
is that the video quality wont be as good as when its close,
and you should be able to get a better cable if that happens.

The USB will either work or it wont, and a hub between
two half length cables should work fine if no hub doesnt.
However I decide to do this, hopefully it will be a long-term solution.

Should work fine as long as you are happy with what you can do with the remote.
I will try that. I assume the hub would have to be the powered type, so that signal is "boosted"
or atleast regulated?

Nope, a non powered one should be fine, essentially because the repeat
function is powered from the cable, not much power is needed to do that.
Thanks for your help.

No problem.
