USB TO SERIAL (RS232) CONVERTOR PROBLEMS

Hi,

Im having probelms with a TARGUS PA088 usb to serial
convertor.

When I plug in a industrial serial device using USB TO
SERIAL CONVERTOR and boot Windows XP up. The mouse pointer
goes berserk. I figured that this occurs due to Windows
detecting the serial device as a serial mouse. When I
disable it in Windows device manager and try it again the
pointer works as normal. However, my serial device does
not work.

I further noticed that when my device is plugged in the
convetor prior to booting up the computer, the usb
convertor is not detected as a COMM port in device manager.
I noticed that there is a constant data transmission from
my serial device to my convertor.

Is there a way to Fix this problem so that my device is
not detected as a serial mouse and the usb to serial
convertor is always detected as a comm port.

regards

Kanu

Hi Kanu,

I'm using a USB to Serial converter from ATEN but am
having some different problems to yourself.

Anyway, to stop your serial device being detected as some
other serial device during boot-up, apply the fix as per
Micrsoft's Knowledge Base article 283063.
I had to apply this as my device was being detected as a
Serial Ballpoint device.
This may also fix your second problem.

If not, I suggest first uninstalling the serial mouse
(e.g. Ballpoint device) that your device is detected as.
After this, I would reinstall your USB-Serial device and
check its settings in Device manger (Control Panel,
System, Hardware, Device Manager, Ports).

Good Luck,
Kieran
