USB storage errors and unable to delete from registry (part repeat

Sorry to post twice, but no joy on this.

win2ksp2 2gb ram 3.8cpu
originally had a 4 in 1 internal card reader/floppy that worked well but at
some time recently had lost settings.

Hardware wizard tries to install drivers the fails with error message
"install failed...a function driver was not specified for this device
instance" and of course puts in device manager with a "!" mark. used all
usual registry tools etc.etc. no joy.

Tried a different card reader, same error.

started safe mode and found in ENUM what looks like the control set with USB
devices and found some showing unknown. After back up tried to delete and
got "can not delete .... error while deleting key" Tried editing a value
in case and returned error "can not edit....error reading registry key"

I am at a total loss. I can see no reason why keys can not be edited or
deleted (even for non attached working devices)

Can anyone (Steve Parry??) please point me at the right key to delete so
detects properly, or, a clue as to what is causing this, what may be
corrupted or what!
(i do weekly registry backups and have gone back a couple of months to try
and find a working one, but given up at 2 months)

Hello JR,

Thanks.

Already running sp4 and all latest updates.

There are other clues, but I've spent too many hours on this to see clearly!
BUT would take 30-50 hours to re-install from scratch.

Other oddities. On log in always 4 errors in event log. Event 17 Removable
Storage manager can not manage library CdRom0 (other three entries are 1 2
and 3). It encountered an unspecified error. This can be casued
by............failure to communicate with the library.... CAN NOT find any
reference to this anywhere - registry et al. and without the internal usb
plugged in and ''uninstalled''

Other odd is that need uhclean running to shut down - shows svchost (560)
will not release handle.

PS try to find out if there is any reference to the errant driver in either
event viewer or device manager, then look in

C:\winnt\inf

for the inf files relating to that driver and removing them.

Also when it shows an errant device, have you tried doing a change device
driver to allocate a new one, then repeat the process to give it the
original manufacturers driver?

No inf for this device as a standard usb card reader, but have found
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/818826/en-us

Now trying to find somewhere to download this hotfix and hope it helps - any
idea of a downlaod link?

....had problems noted about event 17 on removable storage manager.

found after long i/n search that by deleting directory /system32.ntmsdata
and rebooting cured the event 17 errors and hoped that would cure the rest!

Sadly no. Still have the svchost errors on shutdown (uhpclean solves) and
still will not sort out usb

If you call your local Microsoft office they'll send you the hotfix
