I have a digital camera and a scanner that connect to the PC via the USB
port. XP recognises neither device automatically when they're connected in
terms of launching explorer for the camera, or Epson smart panel for the
scanner. I am convinced that they launched automatically when I first
installed Xp and as far as I'm concerned nothing has changed.

Can anyone offer any advice?

Thanks in advance.

Check in Control Panel - Admin Tools - Services, to be sure that Windows
Image Acquisition shows as Started. If it is not, double click it, set
the 'Startup type' to Automatic, and Apply, then click the Start button
to get it running immediately. Then try plugging in your camera (with
the system running when you do so)

Image Acquisition is not showing in either the Standard or Extended tabs.
What does this mean?

That the service has managed to get uninstalled. Try re-registering it:
Start- Run and run the line
regsvr32 wiaservc.dll
