USB PROBLEM SOLVED!!!

I had previously posted that my computer recognized Cruzer memory sticks as
USB 2 but my Dazzle card reader and Soyo USB hard drive were read as USB 1
and a popup screen said that they could work faster if connected to USB
ports.

I went through all of the standard uninstall - reinstall ports and drivers
with no success.

Gateway was prepared to replace the motherboard. Microsoft Paid Support 's
disasterous advice resulted in ultimate reformating of the hard drive and
reinstallation of Windows and all Software.

I read everything I could find on the web related to USB and finally found a
posting from someone who said that while externally powered USB devices
seemed to work on his computer, those drawing power from the USB port
sometimes did not.

Accordingly, I ordered a D-Link powered USB Hub (I'm sure that any other
quality hub would have sufficied). It arrived today.

I powered up the hub, connected it to the computer and it immediately
grabbed one of the 7 - USB 2 ports. I plugged BOTH the card reader AND the
disk drive into it and BOTH now work at the USB 2 speed (I don't have the
warning pop up any more).

So, please add to the literature...if your computer doesn't seem to
recognized self (USB) powered devices as USB 2, consider a powered hub. It
could solve the problem.

The likely issue was your under-powered, over-taxed,
power supply unit in your Gateway computer.
Many major PC manufacturers install only an "adequate"
or "marginal" power supply unit.

What does the user-manual say is the max draw from the USB ports ?
