USB printer problem

C

Carley

Hello,

I'm not too clued up on the workings of PCs, but here's my
problem, I've gave as much information as possible -
hopefully someone can help!!!

- I get the following problem I try to print something
(USB002):

The "job" goes into the printer software & it displays
that there is 1 document being printed/about to be
printed. Then the "1" just disappears & nothing is
printed! The printer makes no noise as if it has even
attempted to print.

If I take the USB cable out of the back of the printer &
then put it back in, the printer makes all the
normal "printer" noises.

If I take the USB cable out of the back of the PC & stick
it in a differnt USB port (there are 2), then it re-
installs the printer....under USB003 (but I only have 2
USB holes on the back of my PC!). Then when I try to
print, the jobs go to the printer software & it displays
that there is 1 document being printed/about to be
printed. This time the jobs do not disappear - the status
says "printing"....then I get an error message:

"There was an error found when printing the
document "driver" to USB003. Do you want to retry or
cancel the job?"....

I try printing a different document & the same thing
happens...I right click on the printer & go to properties
& change the USB to a different port....same thing happens.

I have checked the USB cables which are fine.

I have also tried using my old printer, it works fine in
any USB port at the back of my PC, but when I right click
on the printer icon & change the port, the following
happens:
USB001 - I get the same error above
USB002 - prints fine
USB003 - trys to print but does not (no error message)

I would guess from this that there is some sort of problem
with USB001 & USB003?

(below is what happens with the new printer)
USB001 - I get the same error above
USB002 - sends job to printer which then disappears with
no error message & no movement from printer
USB003 - I get the same error above

- Could I have installed something wrong?

- I have tried removing the printers (by right clicking on
them & deleting) & then re-installing

- I have tried re-installing without changing the drivers
& also by changing the drivers (using the disc provided &
also using a downloaded driver).

9hrs of grrrrrr!
Any help or suggestions would be GREATLY APPRECIATED!!!
Cheers

Open the device manager and remove ALL the USB devices
(ports, hubs, and printers). Use the add/remove hardware
(control panel) to remove printers. Unplug the printer
cables. You can leave a USB mouse and keyboard connected,
but nothing else.

Reboot and your USB will reload but without loading device
drivers (yet). Then install your printer driver software,
follow the directions. This usually means you install the
software BEFORE you ever connect a USB cable. Then after
the software is installed, connect the device (printer,
scanner, whatever) and the correct drivers will be
installed.

just a couple of things to add -

the printers status is shown as "ready" in all examples
above!

I just tried deleting the printers once again & re-
installing them....initally when I tried to print I got
the following error "the printing command is invalid".
this happened twice & then reverted to the other error
mentioned in the post above!

Cheers!

The printers do not show up in the add/remove hardware
(however there is lots of USB stuff)....will they show up
after I remove the USB devices?

Thanks!

The stuff that IS physically installed will come back
automatically when you re-boot. The you can properly
install the printer software, selecting the USB option.
Then when you plug the USB cable in to the printer and then
the computer, it will find the proper drivers and load them.

If the printer has data hard coded into it (some do some don't) the PC will
automatically recognize you have changed USB ports and new drivers are not
installed. If it does not, it insists that new drivers are reinstalled.

At this point in time, since you don't tell us what printer you have, I
think you should COMPLETELY uninstall and then reinstall the printer.
Disconnect the printer from the PC.

If it is NOT a Lexmark, see:
http://www.coribright.com/windows/Article One.htm

If it IS a Lexmark, see:
http://members.shaw.ca/bsanders/CleanPrinterDrivers.htm
and pay particular attention to Bruce's special section on Lexmark printers.

After cleaning the drivers... download a new set of printer drivers from the
manufacturer's website... and install the software. Do NOT reconnect the
printer to the PC until the software tells you to do so.

it's a Primera CD printer

going to try that now....though I think I have maybe
already done it before!
