USB Ports

Can a USB port be updated to USB 2.0 by simply downloading and installing
some kind of drivers to make that happen? I just bought a wireless
networking adapter, and it seems like it is not working on my laptops because
they are older and don't have the newer USB ports. It worked fine on our
newer desktop. When I contacted the maker, they said it worked on the
desktop because it has USB 2.0 ports, and the laptops don't.

They said all I need to do is download and install new drivers to make the
ports into USB 2.0 ports. Is this possible? And if so, what would be the
link needed to get the download?

No, if the port in your machine is USB-1 that's a hardware function
and it cannot be converted to USB-2...

however I'd think the wireless adaptor should still work on a USB-1 port....
check the documentation that came with it

USB 2.0 is both a hardware function, and a software driver requirement.
That is, USB 1.0 and 1.1 are hardware, as is USB 2.0. Some could only work
in USB 1.0 or 1.1 because that is their hardware design. No software driver
can change that. A software driver instructs the OS on how to implement the
hardware. Its physically impossible for a USB 1.0/1.1 port to function as a
USB 2.0 port.

A USB host controller actually controls a pair of USB ports.
