USB Port(s)

I have 2 USB ports on my Dell Inspiron 8500 Laptop, and when I plug either my
printer or mouse into one of them, neither works and I get a pop-up window
that says: "USB Device not recognized. One of the USB devices attached to
this computer has malfunctioned, and Windows does not recognize it. For
assistance, click this message" ...obviously troubleshooting is no help, any
suggestions?

Delete your USB devices and ports in device manager. Unplug
any devices and reboot. Install the mouse and then the
printer.

Err...still getting the same error message after doing that.

Any other suggestions?

Disconnect the devices and open the Registry Editor (Start-Run-regedit).
Navigate to HKLM\System\CCS\Enum\USB and look for the folder
containing information about the problematic devices. Now right click
on the folder labeled Vid_Xxxx that contains the information about the
problematic devices and click Permission. Allow full control of the
key, then right click on it and delete it. Now reboot and try again.

I got to the part with Vid_xxxx but then I don't know what to look for from
there? I don't even know what the port's name is that is being problematic,
how can I figure it out? What I have been doing is leaving the mouse plugged
in and then when I need to print something..unplug the mouse and plug in the
printer, but this is a royal PIA. Further detail on your previous post
possibly? Thanks

Each Vid_Xxxx folder should have at least one folder under it. Expand
and go to that folder and you will see information on the right. Read
the DeviceDesc (Device Description) to figure out what device that
enumeration is for. If that is one of the devices you are having
problems with when connecting the device to the computer, delete that
Vid_Xxxx folder. You could potentially delete all folders under the USB
folder including the ROOT_HUB folders and reboot. I am almost 100% sure
that Windows will redetect everything (at least all of the Vid_Xxxx
folders when you reconnect the devices). Just make sure to disconnect
the USB devices you are attempting to delete its folder before deleting
the folder.
